Story
Meet Jax, a 12-year-old, 40 lb sweetheart with a heart full of love. He's incredibly affectionate and forms deep bonds with his people. Jax is house-trained, knows basic commands, and is brilliantly food motivated—eager to learn new tricks for treats! He's a well-behaved companion who thrives on routine. However, Jax struggles with high anxiety in loud, unfamiliar environments and around people he doesn’t know. He becomes overwhelmed easily and, when overstressed, may snap if touched unexpectedly. For this reason, his ideal home is a calm, quiet, adult-only household with no young children. He needs a patient family who will read his body language and give him space when he needs it. Jax could peacefully coexist with a gentle, calm dog his size or smaller. In the right low-stress environment, this intelligent, food-loving senior boy will be your most loyal and loving friend, ready to spend his golden years showering you with affection.

Story
Meet Lainey  This adorable little Chihuahua mix came from a hoarding situation but was fortunate to be rescued while still a young pup. At one point, her owner had 51 dogs living in a small trailer. Thankfully, concerned family members stepped in to help address a situation that had gotten out of control, and the number of dogs has since been significantly reduced. Worthy Dog became involved through one of our veterinary partners. We sponsor the spay/neuter clinic that has been altering the dogs at no cost to stop the cycle and prevent the population from growing. So far, we've welcomed four dogs from the property into our rescue, and other South Carolina rescues have stepped up to help as well. Despite coming from a dysfunctional environment, Lainey is an incredibly sweet, affectionate, and resilient little dog. Her foster mom describes her as the ultimate snuggle bug. Whether she's curled up in a lap, sitting beside her person, or perched on the back of the couch with her head resting on your shoulder, Lainey always wants to be close to the people she loves. Like many dogs who have lived in a large group with limited resources, Lainey takes a little time to trust new people and environments. When she first arrived in foster care, she preferred to hide and observe from a safe spot. Once she realized she was safe, however, she quickly bonded with her foster mom and became her constant shadow. She is still cautious around strangers and the grandkids when they visit, and may retreat when visitors arrive, but her confidence continues to grow with patience and positive experiences. Lainey is crate trained, does well with housetraining when kept on a regular schedule, and has Ok leash skills. She enjoys walks and exploring new scents, though unfamiliar people and dogs can make her nervous. When she feels unsure, she looks to her person for reassurance. Because of her background, Lainey has some food guarding behaviors around other dogs. She is currently fed separately and does very well with this management. We believe much of this behavior stems from having to compete for resources in her previous environment. She has made great progress in foster care, but her adopters should be prepared to continue managing mealtimes and helping her learn that food is plentiful and secure. Lainey gets along with other dogs overall and is a more confident member of the pack in the home. She would likely do best with adopters who can provide clear boundaries and structure while continuing to build her confidence. Beneath her cautious exterior is a loving, loyal companion who wants nothing more than to be close to her people. With patience, consistency, and understanding, Lainey will reward her forever family with endless affection and devotion. ❤️ If you're looking for a tiny shadow, professional cuddler, and devoted best friend, Lainey may be the perfect match for you. Story
Meet Madison   This adorable little Chihuahua mix came from a hoarding situation, but was fortunate to be rescued while still a pretty young pup. At one point, Madison's owner had 51 dogs living in a small trailer. So far, we've also welcomed four dogs from the property into our rescue, and other other SC based rescues have stepped up to help.  Despite her difficult start, Madison is an incredibly sweet, happy, and resilient little dog. Her foster mom, Renee, describes her as a loving snuggle bug. When Madison first arrived, she spent a couple of days tucked safely in her crate while she took in her new surroundings. Once she realized she was safe, her personality quickly began to emerge. She now follows Renee everywhere, loves to snuggle, and enjoys spending time with her foster siblings. After arriving in foster care in late May, she has continued to gain confidence and has even started playing with Ryder, one of the resident dogs. Madison has a moderate energy level and enjoys a good balance of playtime and relaxation. She gets especially excited when her people come home, greeting them with happy zoomies, jumps, and tail wags before settling in for a nap. Like many dogs who have had limited life experiences, Madison is still learning about the world. New people, sudden noises, and unfamiliar situations can be scary for her. She is cautious around strangers and the grandkids when they visit, and may retreat when visitors arrive, but with patience and encouragement, she continues to build confidence and recovers more quickly from these experiences. Because of this, she would do best with adopters who understand that confidence-building is a process. She's also making steady progress with her leash skills. While walks can still be intimidating at times, she is becoming more comfortable and continues to improve daily. Madison is doing well with housetraining and succeeds when kept on a regular schedule. Her foster mom takes her outside frequently, waits for her to do her business, and rewards her with praise, which Madison responds to very well. Madison is smart, responds well to guidance, and is adapting remarkably quickly to the structure and routine she's never had before. She is crate trained and settles nicely after a brief protest. She loves being close to her people and has blossomed into a sweet, affectionate companion. This little pup has come so far in such a short time. With a little patience, consistency, and love, Madison will reward her forever family with loyal companionship, endless affection, and plenty of cuddles. ❤️ Coming to the DC metro on 6/20. Story
Meet Shaggy...One of the Scooby Doo puppies! Shaggy's story began on Kelly Mountain in Logan County, West Virginia, where he, his mom, and two brothers were found abandoned by a group of hunters far from any nearby homes. When the hunters stopped, the little family immediately approached them, friendly and social, leading us to believe they once belonged to someone and were intentionally left behind. Thankfully, a Good Samaritan stepped in and took the family into her home until rescue help could be secured. Because of her compassion, Shaggy got the second chance he deserved. His mom and brothers have all been adopted, so now it’s Shaggy’s turn. For the past few months, Shaggy has been in his local foster home, living as part of a busy family. He's being fostered with a mom and dad, two children, two adult dogs, and has frequent toddler visitors from the 3-year-old grandson. He loves kids and is very gentle and affectionate with them. He would happily spend his day being held or included in whatever his people are doing. Shaggy has great house manners - he is crate trained, potty trained, sleeps through the night, and is not destructive. He has moved beyond the baby puppy stage now. He's a naturally happy boy who enjoys the company of other dogs and loves spending time with his family. Like many young dogs, Shaggy is still working on his leash manners and social skills. He can be barky when meeting some new people or dogs while on leash, though it's intermittent and situation-dependent. We had a trainer evaluate him, and he feels Shaggy simply needs more exposure to new environments outside the home to continue building his confidence. His foster family has been working with him consistently, and he's already making progress.  We believe Shaggy's ideal home would include another confident, social dog to be both a playmate and a role model. He would likely do best in a suburban setting rather than a busy urban environment. This sweet boy is ready for a forever family that will continue helping him grow while giving him all the love of family. ❤️ Apply today ! Story
Meet Boomer. This handsome bully boy  showed up on a family’s doorstep one winter evening, alone, with no collar, an injured ear, and clearly in need of care. The kind family took him in and brought him to the vet the next morning to check for a microchip and treat his ear. Despite their efforts to find his owner, no one came forward. The family has been fostering him for the past few months, and he has proven himself to be a resilient, sweet, and loyal companion, as well as a good friend to their family dog. Introductions were done slowly, and the two pups have become friends, enjoying walks and downtime together. Boomer is a strong, confident, and affectionate boy whose sweet personality has emerged as he’s settled into home life. He loves head and belly rubs, enjoys curling up on blankets or pillows, and is happy to relax near his people after a walk. While he may look like a bit of a tank at first glance, his foster family quickly discovered what a gentle and loving boy he truly is. He has great house manners and is fully potty trained. Boomer is comfortable with a crate, often choosing to rest there on his own. He has earned free roam privileges in his foster home and sleeps well through the night. He’s also a quiet dog who rarely barks, though you may hear his signature snore when he’s fully relaxed. Boomer enjoys his daily walks and does best with regular exercise. A trainer has worked with him on leash skills, and he has made good progress, though he can still pull at times and will benefit from continued training and structure. He’s a strong boy, so a confident handler will help him continue to improve. Overall, he’s a social pup who is friendly and interested in people, greeting visitors with enthusiasm. He can get excited and may jump up, but he responds well to redirection. He has not shown much interest in toys yet, and play is still a work in progress, but he clearly enjoys being active and engaged. Boomer has come a long way from the night he appeared looking for help. He’s now healthy, neutered, microchipped, and ready for a fresh start. This handsome boy is looking for a home that will provide structure, patience, and love, and in return, he’ll be a devoted companion. Apply today! Story
Meet Rosie This pretty blond Lab came from the same property as our recent doodle mixes, Henrietta and Steve. The Good Samaritans who found them reached out to us about two additional dogs after their neighbor, who breeds doodle mixes, was jailed, and the dogs were left abandoned on the property. Animal Control stepped in, removed the dogs, and asked Worthy Dog to help. Rosie was living outside and was very underweight, with little to no prior vet care. She was very shy and shut down on intake, unsure of this new world around her. We brought in a trainer to get her more comfortable with the leash and thresholds (coming in and out of the home), and her foster mom worked with her to get her more comfortable with all the new sounds and activity of home life. Since entering rescue, Rosie has been slowly learning that people, homes, leashes, and daily life can all be safe and good things. Her foster family is working with to help her build confidence. She is a very submissive, gentle, and conflict-avoidant pup. She does well with other dogs, but to date, she tends to be more of a quiet observer than a playful social butterfly. She would likely benefit from a social, confident dog in the home to help continue showing her the ropes. She has proven to have excellent house manners; she’s house-trained, non-destructive, and settling nicely into foster care. While she was initially fearful of the leash, she now really enjoys walks and follows right along once you get moving. Walks may actually be her favorite part of the day now, and a great way to build rapport with her humans.  Rosie has been spayed and, amazingly, tested heartworm negative. She arrived in Northern Virginia on 5/16 and is currently being fostered in a home with a mom, dad, and college-age son. She is still building confidence and learning to trust, but underneath it all is a very sweet, lovely dog who needs a patient owner who is willing to work with her and give her time to fully blossom.
