Story
Meet Lucille! This English Bulldog is equal parts giant lovebug, sleepy queen, low-key comedian, and professional recipient of butt scratches. Lucille is sweet, calm, quiet, and deeply easy to love. She’s the kind of dog who settles into your home quickly and makes herself comfortable like she’s been there forever. She loves having options when it comes to lounging (ideally multiple large beds to rotate between) and is equally happy napping solo or alongside her people or other dogs. Lucille also adores Benebones and lives for treats, in moderation since she's watching her figure. She is great in the car, walks nicely on leash, sleeps through the night, and does well when left alone, making her a wonderfully low-maintenance companion in all the right ways. Lucille is also a clown in disguise. She's known for her dramatic looks — she’ll be minding her business and then suddenly stop what she’s doing to turn and stare at you with intense, theatrical expression, as if she has something very important to say but prefers to let you figure it out. Add in her unique markings (which have been compared to a tiny goat - once you see it, you can’t unsee it), and you have a dog who quietly keeps you entertained without ever breaking a sweat. Lucille does have some ongoing medical needs that her future family should be comfortable managing. She requires regular eye and ear medications, along with some supplements, and will need consistent basic Bulldog care like face cleaning and monitoring. She also has some mild vision limitations and can have a bit of trouble going down stairs, so a home that’s mindful of her comfort and mobility will help her thrive. She has some mammary lumps and gingival hyperplasia (common for senior Bulldogs) that her forever family will need to monitor. She's also working on losing weight and will need support to make it all the way over the finish line to a healthy place. Lucille would do best in a calm, structured home that loves to snuggle and appreciates a slower pace of life. She gets along well with other dogs and even cats, and while she’s not particularly demanding, she does expect to be loved properly — preferably with regular scratches and a comfortable place to nap nearby. She's housetrained and uses pee pads indoors. Lucille is not here to impress you with tricks or athleticism. She is here to keep you company, make you laugh, and remind you that life is better when you slow down, get comfortable, and fully commit to the nap. Lucille is approximately 10 years old and 60 lbs. Story
Meet Zeke! Zeke came to the Haven from a home where he was a beloved family member. Unfortunately his family could no longer care for him, so he's in the market for a new one. The benefit of adopting a dog like Zeke is that he knows how to behave properly in a home and exactly how much he is entitled to be worshipped. Zeke is housetrained, rides well in the car, and sleeps through the night. He enjoys gentle walks around the neighborhood (10-20min/2-3x a day) and will try to chase squirrels and bark at birds, but walks very nicely on a leash. He has also started trotting like a little pony on walks when he's in a good mood! When he is left alone for a few hours, he usually just settles down for a nap. He should wear a belly band when he's alone, however, as he may want to stage a small protest to your absence. He LOVES cuddles and massages and gets "happy hops" and grunts like a piglet when he wants attention and cuddles but otherwise will settle in the same room as you. (He knows "go lay down"). He likes his licky-mat and treats, which he takes very gently. He has discovered he likes toys! He will do a very light version of "fetch" where you throw his favorite toy about 4ft away and he grabs and shakes it while bringing it back. He absolutely loves any type of affection and touch, massages and cuddles. He enjoys having lots of soft dog beds to choose from at naptime. Zeke has lived successfully with cats and other calm dogs, but he does sometimes engage in resource guarding. So, if he has other animal friends, they need to respect his space. He has done well with older children (we haven't had a chance to observe him around littles). He likes a calm environment and lots of naps, so it might be best to stick to older kids. He does not like being left in a room alone when you're home. When you're home he needs to be where you are or he will bark. (He's currently serving as a furry paralegal and makes a great office dog!) Zeke arrived with some masses, which are being addressed, and a cough from a mild case of collapsing trachea, which is helped by medicine. He has more limited vision at night and may have reduced hearing. He can still see well enough to go up and down the stairs. If you would like a polite, cuddly, well-behaved shadow, come meet Zeke. Zeke is approximately 13 years old and 21 lbs. Fostered in Stony Beach, MD Please apply at MirisHaven.org

Story
Meet Luna! This baby hippo is a sweetheart and bsolutely adorable. Luna has returned to Miri's Haven after more than a year in her adoptive home. Her owner had a medical issue and her family was unable to care for Luna. Luna returned to us completely bewildered, unsure what just happened, and with a few extra pounds that we're helping her shed with time and care. She loves sunbathing, food, and taking long naps - ideally in her favorite cave bed. She is not very leash-trained so would love a fenced in yard to explore (and sunbathe in). She is housetrained, pee pad trained, and gets along beautifully with the other dogs in her foster home. Luna is a great passenger in the car, sleeps through the night, and doesn't mind staying home alone while her humans are out. She needs eye drops twice a day but doesn't mind taking them as long as she is in her bed, which is her safe space. Like many seniors (human and canine!), she has some trouble hearing and seeing, and needs a hand navigating stairs. Since she doesn't love being picked up, a home without stairs would be best. Luna likes having a consistent routine and would love a home that is generally calm and quiet. She's also big on food and snacks (as evidenced by her weight!) - her forever family will need to continue supporting her on her weight loss journey and help her maintain a healthy weight. Luna is a chill, sweet, quiet girl who would love a permanent place to sunbathe. Could you be the one to finally give this girl the forever she deserves? Luna is approximately 10 years old and 10 lbs. Fostered in Severn, MD Please apply at MirisHaven.org

Story
Harvey resembles a ripe peach. He is sweet, fuzzy, orange, and sort of round. He is a great companion: quiet, charming, and handsome. He has one wonky ear that points sideways, while the other points up. Harvey is an excellent car buddy, settling himself quietly on his booster seat and paying close attention to be sure that his human is following the GPS and driving safely. He is happy to snooze on a dog bed while his human works, watches TV, or sleeps. During meals, he stands quietly, not begging but just hoping for a lucky piece of chicken to fall. Harvey gets along with other dogs and does not try to steal anyone else's food or guard his own. He is curious about cats but not aggressive. When a cat rudely swats him in the face, he does not respond in kind, but cries for help from the nearest human. Harvey likes receiving pets and scratches and will respond with gentle kisses. He likes to have some lap time every day, but he isn't demanding about it. Five minutes or so at a time is sufficient. He is a quiet dog generally, although he sometimes barks or growls in his sleep. waking himself up. It's very cute. In terms of housetraining, he seems to understand that, in a perfect world, pottying should take place outside. That said, if no one is home (or not paying attention), he will do what he needs to do. Fortunately, he is potty pad trained (with excellent aim) and accepting of wearing belly bands when needed. He benefits from a regular schedule of potty breaks every few hours during the day and at least once in the night. Harvey enjoys slow walks or sniffaris around the backyard (except in the rain). He likes to smell the wind and listen to the birds. He appears to have passing familiarity with commands such as come/let's go/follow me, as well as leave it and no/nope. Harvey has an enlarged heart and a heart murmur which will require ongoing medication and periodic vet visits. He has a bit of a related cough, for which he also takes medication, which seems to help. Harvey has cataracts that render him mostly blind. He does not let that stop him from getting around. He wanders confidently around the house, on leash, and in the yard. He is very good about following a voice to get around and also enjoys exploring on his own. He can go up a small number of stairs, but would prefer to have help going down. He does not love being picked up but will tolerate it for reasonable periods of time if it helps him get where he needs to go. Harvey is a delight to have around. If you're looking for a quiet, orange shadow, come meet him soon! Harvey is approx 9 years old and 12 lbs. fostered in Falls Church, VA please apply at mirishaven.org

Story
You may have heard of Apple. She became famous when she was found in a DC trash chute, after her prior owner apparently tried to throw her out. Apple was malnourished, anemic, covered with mats, and unable to use her hind legs. But Apple is a fighter, and she has not only survived, but thrived. She greets each new day with joy, excited to sniff around in the grass, lay on soft beds, and enjoy plenty of treats and maybe a pup cup. Although Apple's back legs are of not much help in walking -- seemingly deformed since birth -- Apple can get around suprisingly quickly, mostly using her front legs and sheer determination. She does need to be carried up and down any stairs, but such diva treatment is only appropriate for such a media darling. She is very playful and loves toys. She approaches people eagerly, hoping for plenty of pets, and will let you know if you are shirking your responsibilities. Apple screams when she is happy. She screams when you come home. She screams when dinner is served and, with equal conviction, when it is not. She screams because love, in her small and radiant body, simply does not fit quietly. There is something almost operatic about it ~ this bright, unfiltered sound pouring out of a creature who weighs less than a bag of flour yet feels everything at cathedral volume. Apple can co-exist comfortably, if not quietly, with dogs and cats. She is happy to accept pets from older children but is too fragile to be a good playmate for younglings. She is substantially housetrained, although it's worth having a potty pad available just in case. She's fine going for rides in the car or being left home on her own. She sleeps well through the night and is happy to wear her pajamas at bedtime. Apple's ideal home will have a fenced yard, as she can't quite figure out how leash walks work. She wants plenty of snuggles and treats. She would be happy to be the only pet in the household, to maximize attention, or to have a small dog friend that she can play and nap with. Due to her talkative nature, she is not a good fit for an apartment or condo. Apple is approx 7 years old and 9 lbs. Fostered in Rockville, MD Please apply at mirishaven.org

Story
Meet Lumi! This gorgeous Chi girl greets life (and everyone she meets) with her whole entire body. Lumi is sweet, affectionate, and deeply devoted to her people, with a personality that somehow manages to be both cozy companion and joyful little burst of energy all at once. The highlight of Lumi’s day is seeing you, and she makes sure you know it: her otherwise calm demeanor instantly transforms into a full-body celebration, complete with tail wags at the speed of light, tiny snorts, and a level of excitement that feels wildly disproportionate (in the best way) to her size. Lumi is happiest when she’s close to her people. She doesn’t need to be on top of you at all times, but she very much prefers to be nearby, keeping tabs on your movements and making sure she’s included in whatever you’re doing. She loves walks, enjoys being active, and would thrive with a family that’s excited to take her out and about. At the same time, she’s perfectly content winding down on the couch in the evenings, just happy to be part of your routine. Lumi also has a wonderfully funny side. When it’s mealtime, Lumi doesn’t just get excited—she performs, dancing and tapping her little feet like she’s been waiting her whole life for this exact moment. It’s hard not to laugh, and even harder not to fall completely in love. Lumi is making great progress with potty training and continues to improve. She walks well on leash, sleeps through the night, and is fine when left home alone. She does get a bit anxious in the car, so that’s something her future family can help her build confidence around. She’s also currently awaiting results following the removal of a mammary tumor, but otherwise is a healthy, vibrant little dog who is very much enjoying life. Lumi would do best in a home that will take her on regular walks, keep her engaged, and give her the closeness she loves so much. She is good with cats and other dogs, loves children, and has a friendly, easygoing nature that makes her a great fit for many homes. She does have a curious, adventurous streak and is quick to slip out doors if given the chance, so a secure environment with fences outside and awareness around open doors is key. Lumi brings a kind of joy that sneaks up on you: suddenly your days revolve around her greetings, her routines, and the way she makes even ordinary moments feel like something worth celebrating. Lumi is approximately 9 years old and 12 lbs. Fostered in Lothian, MD Please appy at MirisHaven.org
