Story
Polo is a total sweetie and 90lbs of lap dog. He would make an excellent weighted blanket for those cold winter nights! He loves every person he meets (to the point where staff complain about how long it takes to walk him because he has to stop and say hi to literally everyone!) Polo already knows sit, give paw, and lay down and is fully house trained. He has previously done well with other dogs, although he's been hit or miss meeting them here at the shelter. We'd recommend he start as an only dog and be given time to adjust to his new home before he meets any doggy friends. Polo loves all toys, but rope toys are his absolute favorite! A good game of tug-o-war will make his whole day. He’s a big, strong guy and gets very excited on leash — he pulls with enthusiasm — so his adopters should be prepared for his strength and help him learn to walk politely. Polo is a staff favorite because of his loving demeanor and silly antics! Come meet your new best friend! Ready to Adopt? You have two options: #1- VISIT IN PERSON Come during our open adoption hours: Tuesday - Saturday,12:30 - 3:00pm. You’ll be able to meet available dogs in the shelter. (Dogs in foster care are not available for in-person visits.) #2- ADOPT REMOTELY OR PLACE A 24-HOUR HOLD** If you’re ready to adopt without meeting the dog first, or you’d like to place a non-refundable $25 hold to reserve a dog for 24 hours, just call or email us: (413) 781-4000 x 1 springfield@dakinhumane.org. We are often helping other clients when you call, but we return voicemails and emails within 24 hours. **Holds are not available for puppies under six months, on Saturdays, or during adoption events. -------------------------------------------- All adult dog adoption fees include; -spay/neuter -rabies and kennel cough vaccinations - heartworm test -current parvo/distemper vaccines (may need additional boosters with your veterinarian) -microchip implanted & registered to adopter -treatment of fleas & ticks -veterinary exam and health certificate at Dakin -free vet exam within 30 days of adoption with participating veterinarians Most pets have also received other medical care while with us. Story
BRAD is a nervous boy who has been settling in with his foster, decompressing, and showing himself to be an affectionate pup. OTHER PETS: Brad was unsure meeting dogs at the shelter and would likely do best as an only pet. [Likely (Must Meet First)] OWNER Brad will do best with someone who has experience with positive reinforcement while helping a nervous dog gain confidence. Brad has some anxiety going through doors, and meeting new people, so a slow introduction to new stimuli and the world will be essential in helping him feel comfortable in a new home and environment. While he has been nervous going through doors, barriers should be used while he is still nervous so he doesn't accidentally become startled and find himself lost. [Some Experience] KIDS: Brad bonds closely with his people as he becomes more relaxed. He is very affectionate and social, but young children may be frightening to him. He would be a best fit for teens and older humans that would be able to recognize when he needs space, and when he requests interactions. [15+ / Dog Savvy (Must Meet First)]ACTIVITY LEVEL: Brad enjoys playing in the foster's fenced yard, and so far is going on short walks as he builds confidence and takes in his surroundings. He is a combination of playful and affectionate, and will benefit from regular exercise, and plenty of mental enrichment such as food puzzles and games to help meet his needs. Mental stimulation is incredibly important for all dogs, and can help worried dogs cope with the world. Because he is nervous, a leash or fence will be necessary for all outings. [Couch Potato / Good Walking Buddy] VETERINARY CARE: [Average]LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement training will help Brad bond with his new owner as well as help him learn new skills and tricks. Positive reinforcement, and counterconditioning will help him create happy associations with things he finds scary. Helping Brad continue to blossom will mean letting him learn about new things at his own pace without being forced. GROOMING: Occasional brushing will help keep Brad's coat clean. Story
OTHER PETS: Sugar is excitable with dogs, and will likely do well in a home with a playmate. She would do best with a tolerant dog that can keep up with her high energy antics and rough & rowdy playstyle. [Case-By-Case (Must Meet First)]OWNER EXPERIENCE: Sugar will thrive with an experienced dog owner who understands positive reinforcement, canine body language and signals. She needs someone who can recognize signs of stress or discomfort and work with her using patience and positive reinforcement and help build her confidence. [Some Experience]KIDS: Because Sugar can be nervous around new people and is sensitive to being handled, she would do best in a relaxed, predictable environment. She is not suited for homes with young children but may do well with respectful teenagers (12+) who can understand and respect her boundaries and preferences. A meet-and-greet is required to ensure a good fit. [12+ (Must Meet First)]ACTIVITY LEVEL: Sugar enjoys daily walks and LOVES to play! She can be very jumpy when she and could make a great hiking companion given time and positive reinforcement training. She has a high energy level and would benefit from regular exercise to keep her happy and healthy, as well as plenty of mental enrichment such as puzzles and games. She would likely benefit from another canine companion as well. [Good Walking Buddy / Olympic Athlete]VETERINARY CARE: [Routine]LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Sugar is still at the beginning of her positive training journey, and will do best learning with someone who can offer patience while she adjusts. Positive reinforcement training will help Sugar not only learn her basic cues, but also help her to feel more comfortable and confident in herself! It will provide a good opportunity for her to bond with her new owner as well. [Moderate]GROOMING: Routine brushing will help to minimize shedding in the home. [Minimal]December 24, 2025, 1:22 pm

Spayed or Neutered,
Story
Spongey arrived to TJO with lots of matting, so much so that he almost resembled a certain sea creature from Bikini Bottom. Once freed from all the stuck together hair, Spongey settled in and started relaxing. He does best in a quiet environment that allows him to enjoy the benefits of frequent naps so he can continue to be playful. A slow integration to a new home, and a reliable routine will help him acclimate to his new digs.OTHER PETS: Spongey is interested in other dogs and has invited play with another older dog. His best fit would likely be with another older dog who is social with a similar play style (not too rambunctious). As with all our dogs, Spongey should meet any dogs he would be living with prior to adoption. [Case by Case (Must Meet First)]OWNER EXPERIENCE: Spongey can be particular about the kind of handling he likes and when exactly he wants it. He would do best with someone that has experience with dogs and positive reinforcement, and knows when to let him have his own space. Spongey will bond closely & enjoys spending time with his guardian. [Some Experience]KIDS: Spongey is particular with handling but has not exhibited resource guarding while at the shelter. He flourished in a quiet space in the kennel and would do best in a quiet home. Any minor humans should meet Spongey prior to adoption. [Case by Case (Must Meet First)] ACTIVITY LEVEL: Spongey enjoys laying in bed, rolling around in his bed, and playing with various toys. As he feels better is becoming more active and curious about the environment. He is the quintessential old man who refuses to stop playing, even if he can't play as much as he used to when he was younger. He's affectionate when he is comfortable and enjoys being social. Mental enrichment (play, food puzzles, games) will help meet his nees. [Couch Potato] VETERINARY CARE: Spongey will need a good relationship with a vet with bi-annual check-ups to ensure that he has a good quality of life as he continues to age. He has recently had a dental in which the rest of his teeth were removed. [Above Average] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement training will help Spongey bond with his new owner as well as help him learn new skills and tricks to keep his mind active. Spongey barks when he experiences big changes and will likely bark initially, but once he feels more relaxed he barks less. A reliable potty schedule and lots of treats & happy voices will help him transition to a new home and limit potty accidents. [Minimal] GROOMING: Regular brushing will keep Spongey's coat clean and matt-free between grooms, he should be groomed every 6 -8 weeks. [Professional Grooming] December 30, 2025, 3:59 pm

Story
This is Solé (pronounced Sol-lay), she is a 1 year old Yorkie. She is VERY energetic & very playful. She’s good around other pets. I don’t have children of my own, but when I brought her around children, she was great with them! I got her from my father who has 2 dogs who mated & was giving away the litter she was in. She is fully vaccinated & she is microchipped. She’s just not spayed yet. She’s a wonderful dog, but unfortunately due do my work schedule, I don’t have a yard, & I live alone, I’m unable to give a proper home for her. She needs a home where she can run around all day to get the energy out. I won’t be able to keep her long, so hopefully I can find someone who’d love her, have the time for her, & to let her run free.
